The complexity of sociology, its large ambition, the delicate relationship between sociology and other social sciences, the intangibility of the social perspective which needs to be reconfirmed all over again in every new research project, and, finally, the need to further strengthen the unity of social sciences, altogether make the definition of sociology ever current and intriguing. Furthermore, this is so because the literature is abundant with successful attempts to define the subject of sociology, using inadequate terms which are difficult to interpret in an empirical way (like 'wholesomeness', 'totality'), and due to the fact that the research topics of sociology are not clearly defined and that a proper sociological discourse has not yet been established. This paper criticizes various local and international authors in their attempts to define sociology in the contemporary textbooks. This is followed by the definition of sociology and stressing the need for adequate explanation of its definition which unveils what is the essence of the sociological perspective. This further shows how sociology is a general and synthesizing science about society with the task to theoretically and methodologically integrate the results of other social sciences. .en
